Welcome Welcome to the ArtsHouse and our new Spring/Summer programme. 2017 looks set to be a bumper year for us. We have a vast and varied programme of entertainment offering something for everyone, in our bid to bring you more of what you want. I am particularly thrilled with the medley of musical talent visiting us over the coming months. The acclaimed West End musical star Maria Friedman will be singing the songs of Sondheim and Bernstein and actress Anne Reid, fresh from Last Tango in Halifax, shares songs and stories from her incredible career. I like to think that the ArtsHouse has funny bones and we are fortunate to welcome some of the best names in international comedy. Rich Hall, Hal Cruttenden, John Shuttleworth and Jo Caulfield are all headed here and “The All Star Stand Up Show” promises to be a great evening, combining the talents of Stewart Francis, Justin Moorhouse and Jim Tavare with compere Jarred Christmas. We look forward to hosting a series of “Evenings with” events, inviting a range of speakers from Countryfile’s Cotswold farmer Adam Henson, to the wonderful Ann Widdecombe. Whilst we work hard to be a dynamic and constantly evolving business, there are some things we do not wish to change. We take great pleasure in remaining a home to our resident orchestra, The Orchestra of the Swan, as well as to the Stratfordupon-Avon Literary Festival and our own in-house drama club. This year we will host our very own Folk Festival across the first weekend of June. Boasting some of the finest folk in folk – Show of Hands, Cara
Dillon, Sam Kelly, Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman and many more - it promises to be a weekend to remember. Finally, may I offer a sincere thank you for your continued support. It is a real pleasure to serve the people of Stratford and it is important to us that we do it well so please come and see us – I promise you won’t be disappointed. We look forward to seeing you soon. Best wishes Jenna Harvey - General Manager
We like to look forward at the ArtsHouse - what we do next is more important to us than what we just did. Forgive me, though, for taking this opportunity to thank our team for producing the most successful year in the venue’s history. Thousands of children joined us for our Panto, our comedy nights consistently sold out, the Orchestra of the Swan and the Stratford Literary festival produced popular and critically acclaimed events and we hosted countless community-facing events, supported a youth theatre group and provided a home for a fundraising bash which helped the new hospital fundraising campaign on its road to raising £1mn. We’ve never been busier and with our first in-house produced Folk Festival and a Summer Ball around the corner, things will get even better. We have come a long way in our short history as ‘The ArtsHouse’ - please keep joining us as our journey continues. My thanks on behalf of the community, as ever, to the superb ArtsHouse team, a fabulous Board of Trustees and the Town Trust for their continued support. Most of all, thank you for coming!
The Phoenix Players Present Beauty and the Beast Thurs 2 - Sun 5 March, 2:30pm & 7:30pm
The Phoenix Players’ upcoming production is their own rendition of Beauty and the Beast, written and directed by Lee Holt. It tells the tale of Belle, a girl wondering what the world has to offer and finding that all of her hopes and dreams only exist in mere fairy-tale; but do they? The Kingdom has forever been ruled by a kind and just royal family, full of content subjects and prospering in every way. All reasons that made Izra, a dark and evil Sorceress, reach for power and sought to marry the beloved Prince Adam just to take the crown for herself. The Prince, however, saw through her façade and refused her marriage proposal, though perhaps lived to regret it as in return the scorned Sorceress turned him into a Beast and enchanted his entire castle!
The one weakness of this enchantment? True Love. Will Belle find the fairy-tale she is searching for? Will the Beast ever learn that he can be loved? Will Gaston’s hopeless ‘charm’ win Belle in the end? Will Izra claim the crown and Kingdom as her own? Come and see this wonderfully magic show to find out. There will be some familiar faces, with some not-so-familiar names along the way! A show that certainly promises to be A Tale As Old As Time… Tickets Full price £10 Concessions £8 (Over Sixty & Children) Family ticket £28 (In the following combinations: 2 full price + 2 concessions or 1 full price + 3 concessions)

From the New World

Tchaikovsky’s abiding love of Mozart and the 18th century style, is exemplified in the Variations on a Rococo theme to be performed by OOTS Associate Artist and BBC Young Musician winner Laura van der Heijden. If you don’t know the voice of Cara Dillon, you’re in for a treat. If you are already amongst her legions of admirers around the world, you know you have something special in store. A Thousand Hearts, Cara Dillon’s fifth solo album, is another small masterpiece of song and emotion, ethereal and radiant, beautifully honed and perfectly true. The extraordinary Irish singer makes music that transcends genres and crosses barriers. She has won every folk award going, but confesses to being no purist, making music that reaches beyond the constraints and limitations of tradition. “To me, you can go anywhere with every song. The melody and message is at the forefront of everything I do. I don’t really care where the song came from, how old it
is, and who did it first. It’s whether it strikes a note in my heart, does it haunt me, do I need to sing it?” “Some folk musicians want to know every detail about a song, and I really empathise with that,” adds Cara. “But it’s not what’s important to me. I just identify with a song, I’m looking for something that touches me deeply, and I feel like I’m the vessel for letting it live on.” With support from Magik River. An Audience with Ann Widdecombe Thursday 13 July 7.30pm One-time Shadow Home Secretary and long-serving Tory MP Ann Widdecombe has reinvented herself since leaving Parliament. Her inimitable performances on Strictly Come Dancing and her pantomime turns alongside Craig Revel Horwood have made her a popular and familiar face on stage and TV. Theatres and festivals absolutely love hearing her talk about her life which still involves serious debate and regular TV documentaries. How often can you hear a former Shadow Home Secretary revealing what life is really like at the centre (well OK, right of centre) of British politics? She had a formidable reputation in Parliament and remains relentlessly outspoken. However, live on stage Ann is engaging, entertaining and refreshingly down to earth. An unmissable evening, which definitely has ‘something of the night’ about it. All Tickets: £20
