S health rarely counting steps? self.GalaxyS6

So I've had my s6 edge for about a month now and everything was running great until a couple of days ago when I noticed that my step counter wasn't reflecting the amount I was walking in the day. Usually I clock up an average of 3-4k, I'm not fussed for accuracy to the step but it's nice to know I'm being active.
Anyway since a couple of days ago my phone is rarely picking up steps when moving. I can shake the phone, jump up and down and stamp my feet and yet, nothing. Almost as if the service is hanging. I've tried uninstalling s health and reinstalling with no luck. It picked up a total of 400 steps today when I've probably been the most active in a while. I've noticed that it seems to count most steps when the phone is in my hand and not in my pocket. I've not had this issue previously so im a bit baffled.
Does anyone have the same issue or could it be a defective pedometer (if it even has one?) I'd like to fix it but I'd rather not try a factory reset unless absolutely have to. Thanks. 6 comments share save hide report

S Health won't increase the step count if you simply shake it or move the phone around.
It won't increase the step count until you actually do start moving. It won't immediately increase the step count, but it'll compensate by making increasing the step count at a faster rate.
My S6 has been accurate as I typically walk 10k steps on my college campus.
It is bizarre that you are getting a lesser step count. Not sure if a reset would fix that though.

Yeah it's really strange. I can pin point the time it stopped working on new years eve because of the hourly tracking. I was out until gone midnight but it stopped dead around 9pm and hasn't been right since.

Do you know if the phone uses a sensor or a pedometer chip to detect steps? Just trying to fathom why it is no longer as accurate. Here's a picture to show what I mean http://imgur.com/nenbou9 permalink

I similarly had mine undercount, although not to that degree. The problem fixed itself when I started using my Gear S2 with S Health to track steps. Maybe it's a good excuse for you to get one ;) permalink

This might sound stupid and I'm almost certain it made no difference before but if I put my phone in my pocket with the finger print scanner nearest my feet it works fine. Upside down however and it doesn't. Whilst I would like a gear s2 I can't justify the price for the amount of use it would probably get! permalink

This has happened to me a few times. Idk if a restart helps or clearing the app's cache/data. It usually starts working again after a couple days. permalink

Galaxy s6 Edge Plus suddenly starts overheating?

For me it seems to be the orientation of the phone. Quite annoying that if I put it in my pocket upside down it doesn't pick up steps. I've tried restarting phone and also uninstalling the app I guess that's the same as clearing the cache? permalink
