Hey Sébastien, thanks for this article. How to set up the health application to automatically count how many km or miles someone has cycled on the bike? I must use third party applications, like sports tracker in order to get information like that. It would be useful if an application could automatically recognize cycling as a mode of movement. This might be an idea for another article on IDB.. 14

As explained by another commenter here, the motion coprocessor can't do this at this time. If you have an Apple Watch, then use the Outdoor Cycling tracking, which will report back to the Health app. If you don't have a watch, then I believe your best option is still to use a third party app • Reply • Share ›

If you have an apple watch just use the workout app on it. And the iphone will do the rest. • Reply • Share ›

For now Apple hasn't add a bicycle counter yet in their M9 chip, maybe it's something the iPhone 7 will have... For the same reason I bought a Misfit wearable (Flash). It distinguishs between several movement, even swimming strokes will be added (hence it's waterproof). So for app $20 it makes a great companion for your iPhone! • Reply • Share ›

Where did the 10,000 step recommendation come from? Is there any validation for that? Is there any recommendation for different ages or groups?

Do I have to be connected to the Internet the whole time?

Nope. The iPhone detects steps using built in hardware. The only reason you might need internet is if you're using a fancier fitness app that shows your path on a map - but even then, most such apps can track your path using only GPS and then go online later to show the map. • Reply • Share ›

Is there any pedometer app that can do laps? For example I want to keep track of how much steps I'm taking on certain event/area instead of daily steps. I can't find an app for that until now. Anybody knows? :)

Well I used to walk 6k-7k a day also, but since I have a dog it's easily 10k-12k a day. So my advice: get a dog! ;-)

6,000 seems low no? I take Atleast 13,000 a day

Yes, compared to the 10,000 recommended, it is low, but it is also a realistic goal. The real challenge is to do it every day. I mean, every. Single. Day. • Reply • Share ›
