Moves on iPhone is not tracking 1. Do you have the Background App Refresh on for Moves? (iPhone Settings app > General > Background App Refresh) => Please enable, Moves cannot work in the background without it. 2. Sometimes iPhone needs to free memory for other apps and this

may cause Moves to be stopped. Moves attempts to wake up again as soon as possible, but usually that requires you to start moving geographically. Avoiding use of memory-intensive apps like games may help avoid this issue. 3. iOS 7.0 only: Do you ‘close’ the app manually by swiping it up in the

multitasking UI (the view you get by pressing the home button twice)? => Please don’t, Moves will stay off until you start it again yourself. Note that in this case on iOS 6 and iOS 7.1+ and the app will continue after some time automatically. Moves tracked my route poorly In order to optimize battery use, GPS is not used constantly. Therefore there may be some shortcuts in your routes. Movement speed also affects accuracy, so fast movement is less accurate. We work constantly to improve accuracy while keeping battery use low. Storyline is missing my latest moves Sometimes it may take a while to update your storyline if our servers are busy or there are network problems. Don’t worry, your data is saved on your phone and your storyline will be updated when the data can be processed again. Accelerometer problem on Android Moves uses the phone's accelerometer to recognize activities and steps. Unfortunately some Android phones aren't capable of using the accelerometer when the screen is off. Samsung Galaxy Note II is the most popular model that is unable to run the accelerometer in the background. Battery saving mode on Android Some phones like Sony Xperia have a battery saving mode called “Extended Standby Mode” that prevents Moves from tracking in the background. If you see lots of strange ‘Moves off’ periods, we recommend that you disable the battery saving mode. How does Moves work? Moves uses sensor and location information from your iPhone to recognize activities, routes and places. The data is uploaded to our servers, which do most of the complex processing to produce your daily stats and storyline. Where should I carry my phone for Moves to work? Moves works in your pocket, bag, purse, hand or armbandthe important thing is that you have your phone on you. The app cannot track your walking, running and cycling if you leave it at home :). Which activities does Moves recognize? Moves recognizes walking, cycling and running. It also recognizes all motorized travel as “Transport”. Other activities are not yet automatically recognized. How accurate is the step counter? Moves recognizes steps when you are continuously walking or running. The accuracy is good for following day-to-day changes in activity levels, or comparing step counts to daily targets. To conserve battery, very short walks (less than 30 sec) are not always counted, except on iPhone 5s and Android phones with hardware step counting. If you're having a bumpy car/train ride and see steps going up in the app, don't worry: they are eventually removed from the daily total when the data is analyzed in more detail (unlike some other pedometers and gadgets). Does Moves recognize running and walking on a treadmill? If you carry your phone, it should recognize the activities. However the distance calculation may not be accurate. How does the app work in the background? The app automatically tracks your activity in the background. If you ‘close’ the app in the recent apps list on iPhone (double-tap home button and swipe up), it will continue tracking soon (iOS 6 and iOS 7.1+). Note that on iPhone iOS 7.0 the app will actually stop until you reopen it. If you want to stop tracking, it’s best to open Moves and choose Menu > Stop Tracking. How can I backup / transfer my data to another phone? Create a free account in the app by providing your email address and password. When you start using Moves on a new phone, sign in with that account either in start screen or in Settings > Account. Can I turn off the app? Yes, you can do so via the settings inside the app (Tracking). However, we think you will get the most out of the app if you track all of your everyday activities. Why can’t I have step counting or activity recognition without location services? Moves is designed to use both acceleration and location information to recognize activities. On iPhone the app will not track at all without location services. On Android the results for places, routes and activities will be significantly worse. Is GPS on all the time? No. GPS is not used when the phone is stationary, and it is used only occasionally to detect movement speed and routes. Note that on iPhone the arrow icon in the status bar doesn’t mean that the GPS is on. It’s for indicating that location services are on in general. How much battery power does Moves consume? The app runs continuously in the background, which does consume battery power. Our goal has been to create an app that will allow your phone to run satisfactorily if you charge it nightly. We have achieved this goal in our tests, but your results may vary. There are many variables that affect battery consumption. We are continuously optimizing battery consumption. Why does Moves sometimes recognize activities or places incorrectly? Moves is based on state-of-the-art activity- and place-recognition algorithms, but minor hiccups can (and will) occur. You can easily correct these by tapping the incorrect part of your storyline and then tapping the pen icon. The app learns, so any corrections you enter will make it smarter in the future. Does Moves work abroad when data roaming is off? Moves can collect data without an internet connection. This data will be analyzed as soon as you have a connection again. However, on iPhone, if you travel to a new country and do not have a data connection, the location services in your phone may be less accurate until you establish a network connection. Visiting a Wi-Fi hotspot just once can help the phone produce better location data. On Android the location services are fairly dependent on availability of data connection. This means that without data connection location data gets less accurate, and this will affect recognition of places and routes. Who gets to see my data? See our Privacy Policy (/privacy). Is there an API? Yes! Read more about it: Moves Developer Site ( Can I export my data? If you are technically oriented, you can use the API ( to export your data. We plan to support easy export in the future. Can I delete my data? Yes, you can delete your data and account in Moves settings > Account. Alternatively you can request your data to be deleted using the contact feature in the app: Help > Contact > Request to Erase My Data. Who owns Moves? Moves is developed and run by ProtoGeo Oy. We are a team of eight people, led by Designer CEO Sampo Karjalainen ( ProtoGeo has received seed funding from Lifeline Ventures (, PROfounders (, angel investors and Tekes ( To get in touch with the team, contact Sampo (mailto:[email protected]). What phones do you support currently? Moves works on iPhone and Android (4.0 or later). How can I send feedback? We recommend using the Feedback function inside the app. iPhone: Choose Help from main menu, then tap “Contact”. Android: Choose Help from main menu, then tap the options button and select “Contact”. You can also send feedback via email: [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]).
